Job Description
The Center for Transportation Research (CTR) is seeking a technician to collect traffic data under a contract with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).


Responsibilities
The primary duties of this position include field collection of traffic data, data entry and reporting, and support for other sponsored or university activities. Typical traffic data collection activities include:
  • Ensure the assigned state-owned data collection vehicle is supplied properly with equipment and supplies (traffic counters, road tubes, chains, locks, clamps, nails, etc.)
  • Travel to designated locations where traffic counters are to be placed
  • Perform proper placement and setup of pneumatic count tubes and electronic traffic counters
  • Return to previous sites on time (typically 24 or 48 hours after the original counter deployment) to collect counter equipment and retrieve data
  • Report daily counting activity/progress using TDOT's count program management system
  • Submit traffic count data and weekly activity reports to TDOT and CTR staff weekly
  • Conduct other traffic data collection activities, including manual intersection turning movement counts, on an as-needed basis

A TDOT-owned van will be assigned to the position holder. This van will be used on a daily basis as count equipment is deployed and retrieved. This position will require daily travel with some overnight and statewide travel. Some work locations may require the position holder to travel away from home for an entire work week. The position holder will report to a supervisor within CTR but must also communicate and coordinate activities with multiple TDOT staff members.

Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Two years of prior full-time work experience is required. Prior traffic data collection experience is preferred but not required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • the ability to perform labor-intensive fieldwork in a variety of weather conditions
  • knowledge of Windows-based computers and common office productivity software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and email clients such as Microsoft Outlook
  • the ability to read and translate printed and electronic road maps
  • the ability to travel on a daily basis with frequent overnight travel
  • strong communication skills
  • attention to detail
  • the ability to work independently without frequent interaction with supervisors

Other Conditions of Employment: Applicants must hold a valid driver's license and reside within the State of Tennessee.
